Author

R. Roland Finch is an author from Flagstaff, Arizona. Light’s Shadow is his debut novel and the first book in the Raiders of Light Series.

Additionally, he has published two works via this website that are free to access: The Keeper of Knowledge: Sample Chapters (fiction | fantasy) and The Early Days Collection (fiction | various). Finally, he is working on The CuRe All Letters (non-fiction | culture), which are being released initially as a series of blog posts.

Although he has dreamed of writing professionally since he was a grade schooler, his path to publishing his debut novel took a circuitous route over the course of many years as a project/program/portfolio manager and, currently, business architect. Synthesizing many disparate elements into a large, working system is something he enjoys very much. He draws inspiration from his various travels and adventures, his upbringing, and his family.

Light’s Shadow

Book #1 from the series: Raiders of Light

The Lightborne and the Darktouched have been at war for generations. While the soldiers of the Lightwatch hunt their enemy, those blessed by darkness seek refuge in the depths beneath the earth, hunting the abyss for treasures and knowledge.

When Lucas Devlin is thrust into the very heart of this conflict, his life is stripped away from him....

Chapter 1 | An Old Friend and a Promise

The man called Cal Linz blinked his tired eyes and set aside the old book he had been reading. His search for guidance had finally ended. He had stood at this crossroads far too long, and having a decision forced on him by now obvious truths had humbled him. Unsatisfied, those...

Morning’s gentle breath nudged the damp, sleeping grass awake and stirred faint ripples in a small duck pond. Oblivious to the wind, a black Bentley pulled up in front of the old café on Jefferson Street. For a moment it lingered in stillness, then the driver’s side door opened, and a grey-haired man emerged. Closing the door, his back fixed in a rigid upright position, he stiffly moved toward the little cabin-like building before him. Each...

Time had won. The book came to rest on the cobbled path—a life spent in it, on it. He sat silently a short distance away. Watching, listening to the screams of protest and painful wails it made. He exhaled puffs of steam in the cold air. Grey, vacant eyes shielded by wire rimmed spectacles let go a sigh and the pressure faded. Reflected colors and memory slid down his wrinkled and careworn visage. Her eyes had pleaded, cried, begged; he was...

BookLife Editor's Pick

"Blending coming-of-age fantasy, impressive subterranean worldbuilding, a sense of the mythic, and the occasional dash of Chaucerian stories-within-stories, Finch’s surprising debut is set in a world recognizable as ours—but below it, in its strangest shadows."

"Finch’s approach to fantasy emphasizes light and dark, underground and otherworldly explorations, and a surprising mix of science, technology, myth, multi-cultural practices, and folklore, with stories of the ancient conflict, covenants, and creatures, often shared in mythic monologues or archaic texts."
